Chaye Sarah

PARSHAT CHAYE-SARAH

The Torah reading this morning begins to tell the story of the life of the second patriarch, Isaac.  His mother Sarah dies and as soon as Abraham concludes mourning for her, he sends his chief servant Eliezer to Haran where Abraham still has family.  His mission is to find a suitable mate for Isaac.  Eliezer returns with Rebecca and Isaac marries her.

First Aliyah Genesis chapter 23:1-16  pp.  127-129

Sarah dies and Abraham purchases a burial plot for her from the land holdings of Ephron. Ephron offers it to Abraham for free, but Abraham insists on paying more than the market price.

Second Aliyah  23:17-24:9  pp.  130-132

The burial plot becomes the cemetery for all the patriarchs and matriarchs (except Rachel). Abraham has his servant Eliezer swear that he will find a suitable wife for Isaac among his family in Haran.

Third Aliyah  24:10-26  pp.  132-134

Eliezer begins his mission.  He says upon reaching Haran that the first woman to offer drink for his camels would be the one for Isaac.  It turns out that Rebecca is the woman who does that.

Fourth Aliyah - 24:27-52  pp.  134-137

Rebecca runs back home to inform her family of a visitor.  Her brother Laban returns and tells Eliezer to come home with him.  Eliezer tells Laban and the family all the details of his mission.  Laban and the others agree to give Rebecca to Eliezer for Isaac.

Fifth Aliyah - 24:53-67  pp.  137-138

Eliezer gives them gifts of silver and gold in gratitude.  Rebecca agrees to go with Eliezer.  Isaac sees them coming and goes out to greet them.  The text states that he brought Rebecca into his mother’s tent, he loved her, and was consoled for the loss of his mother.

Sixth Aliyah -25:1-11  pp.  139-141

Abraham takes another wife, Keturah.  He gives Isaac everything he owns and then he dies.  Isaac and Ishmael bury their father in the plot next to Sarah.  After Abraham dies, God blesses Isaac.

Seventh Aliyah - 25:12-18  p. 141

We are presented with a list of Ishmael’s descendants and then Ishmael dies.

Maftir - 25:16-18  p. 141

Haftorah  - I Kings  1:1-31  pp.  143-145

The Haftorah describes the death of King David and the passing of the kingship to his son, Solomon.  Just as our Torah reading described the passing of God’s blessing from Abraham to Isaac, so does the Haftorah describe the passing of kingship from David to Solomon. Click |HERE|
