Emot
Parshat Emor
Our reading from the Torah this morning is a continuation of the code of behavior for the priests in the Temple. Priests had to dress a certain way, they had to be without blemish and they could only marry certain women. The portion continues with a list of holidays of the year and concludes with more obligations for the priests.
First Aliyah - Leviticus chapter 21:1-15 pp. 717-719
The priest cannot defile himself in any way because of his holy mission. He must not shave and can only marry a certain type of woman. Any deviation would be a desecration.
Second Aliyah - 21:16-22:16 pp. 719-722
A priest with any type of handicap may not serve in the Temple. Only priests could eat of the holy food.
Third Aliyah 22:17-33 pp. 722-724
The animals to be brought for sacrifice had to be without blemish. All of the above were to be followed in order not to profane God’s name.
Fourth Aliyah - 23:1-22 pp. 724-727
A description of the Sabbath, Passover, bringing the measure of grain for 49 days after Passover and the holiday of Shavuot.
Fifth Aliyah - 23:23-32 pp. 727-728
The holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Sixth Aliyah - 23:33-44 pp. 729-730
The holiday of Sukkot.
Seventh Aliyah - 24:1-23 pp. 731-733
The people are commanded to bring olive oil for the eternal light which Aaron and the priests are to attend to daily.
The people are also commanded not to blaspheme God’s name. The penalty for blasphemy is death.
