Haazinu

Parshat  Ha’Azinu

Last week’s Torah reading concluded with the commandment from God to Moses and Joshua to teach the people the following poem.  Its purpose is to serve as an eternal testament to the people of the covenant between God and the community of Israel. This poem, like the book of Deuteronomy, is a review of Israel’s history and foreshadows Israel’s future.

First Aliyah - Deuteronomy chapter 32:1-6  pp.  1185-1186

The heaven and the earth are to serve as witnesses to the words of this poem.  We must acknowledge God as our creator.

Second Aliyah  32:7-12  pp.  1186-1187

We are to remember our history; remember how God gave us the land of Israel as our inheritance.  We were lost in the desert, but God led us to the Promised Land.

Third Aliyah  32:13-18  pp.  1187-1189

God gave us a rich fertile land but Israel waxed fat from the riches of the land and forsook God.

Fourth Aliyah - 32:19-28  pp.  1189-1190

God decides to hide his face from Israel.  Out of jealously, God punishes the people with attacks from enemy nations.  But God will save the people from destruction.

Fifth Aliyah - 32:29-39  pp. 1190-1192

Out of respect for His own name, God will save Israel.  Since other nations are worse than Israel, God does not want it known that He created a nation void of counsel to defeat His people, Israel.

Sixth Aliyah - 32:40-43  pp.  1192-1193

God is lord of vengeance.

Seventh Aliyah  - 32:44-52  pp.  1193-1195

Moses tells the people that if they hearken to the words of the poem, they will merit a long life.  God then commands Moses to climb Mt. Nebo and look at the land of Israel.  God informs Moses that he will die on the mountain.

Maftir - 32:48-52  pp.  1194-1195

Haftorah  - II Samuel 22:1-51  pp.  1197-1201

Our Torah portion was a “song” and this haftorah is David’s “song” sung upon being saved from his enemies and from King Saul.  Our Torah portion is aimed at the entire community and the haftorah is an individual prayer.
