Kedoshim
Parshat Kedoshim – Rosh Chodesh
As Rabbi Hertz notes in his commentary, this morning’s Torah reading is “a manual of moral instruction”. It contains the obligations we have to follow in order to be a holy nation. As the great sage Hillel noted, the most important precept, contained in this morning’s reading, is to love our fellow as we would be loved – the rest is commentary.
First Aliyah - Leviticus chapter 19, verse 1-19:14 pp. 693-695
The introduction to these laws is “be holy for I the Lord am holy”. We are not to make idols; we are to offer sacrifices in the proper manner; when we harvest we are to leave a corner of the field for the poor, and we are not to oppress our neighbor.
Second Aliyah - 19:15-22 pp. 696-698
We are to be fair in justice, we are not to take vengeance against anyone, and we are to keep species of all kinds separate.
Third Aliyah 19:23-32 pp. 698-700
The first three years of produce is forbidden for human consumption. We are forbidden to shave our faces, we are forbidden to tattoo, and we are forbidden to consult ghosts or other spirits.
Fourth Aliyah - 19:33-37 p. 700
We are to treat strangers with respect and have standard weights and measures.
Fifth Aliyah - 20:1-7 p. 701
We are forbidden to sacrifice our children.
Sixth Aliyah - 20:8-22 pp. 701-703
We must treat our parents with respect, we must not commit adultery, and other sexual relationships are forbidden as well.
Seventh Aliyah - 20:23-27 pp. 703-704
We are to remain a unique and distinct nation.
Maftir - Numbers 28:9-15 pp. 930-931
Since today is the beginning of the new month, we read a selection from the second Torah scroll describing the special offerings brought on Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh.
Haftorah - Isaiah 66 pp. 1220-1223
This special haftorah for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh is an uplifting message. Isaiah foresees a time when every shabbat and new moon everyone will come to Jerusalem to worship God.
