Parshat Ki Tetze
This portion contains Moses’ summary of the civil law code. It includes family law, ethical practices, marriage and divorce, and concludes with the admonition not to forget the dastardly act of the Amalekites.
First Aliyah - Deuteronomy chapter 21:10-21 pp. 840-842
When going to war one is permitted to take women captive and marry them, however, certain conditions apply. We are also told that in a case of a rebellious son, the son may be executed. The rabbis comment that they never tried a case of a rebellious son.
Second Aliyah - 21:22-22:7 pp. 842-843
If your enemy’s animal is lost and you happen upon it, you must care for it; so too with any lost article. Men cannot wear women’s clothing and vice versa.
Third Aliyah - 22:8-23:7 pp. 843-847
Laws against mixing seeds together in the same field and animals of different strengths under the same yoke. Laws regarding relations with women are presented along with rules for who may or may not enter the sanctuary.
Fourth Aliyah - 23:8-24 pp. 847-850
Laws regarding the holiness of the people and the camp.
Fifth Aliyah - 23:25-24:4 p. 850
Laws regarding divorce.
Sixth Aliyah - 24:5-13 pp. 850-852
Laws regarding loans.
Seventh Aliyah - 24:14-25:19 pp. 852-857
We are not to oppress the poor, in fact we are to help the poor in various ways. If a man dies childless his brother is supposed to marry the widow in order to have children to perpetuate the family name. The portion concludes with the reminder not to forget how the Amalekites attacked from the rear, where all the women and children were camped.

In this fifth Haftorah in the series of seven, Isaiah reassures the people that God is kind. Just as God is kind and merciful so too should the people be. “For a small moment have I forsaken you but with great compassion will I gather you.”
