Parshat Metzora - Shabbat Hagadol
This morning we continue to read about laws concerning leprosy. These laws describe the procedures that are necessary for purification and the sacrifices that had to be brought when one is cured.
First Aliyah - Leviticus chapter 14, verse 1-14:12 pp. 660-661
A description of how the leper is to be purified. After he is declared clean the leper may then enter the camp, but must remain outside his home for seven days.
Second Aliyah - 14:13-20 pp. 661-662
Sacrifices of atonement are offered by the priest on behalf of the leper.
Third Aliyah 14:21-32 pp. 662-663
Arrangements that are made if the leper cannot afford the standard sacrifices.
Fourth Aliyah - 14:33-53 pp. 663-666
Laws regarding a plague of leprosy that may afflict a house. If the plague persists after replastering, then the house has to be razed.
Fifth Aliyah - 14:54-15:15 pp. 666-668
Impurity as a result of unusual flows of bodily fluids.
Sixth Aliyah - 15:16-28 p. 668-669
A continuation of these laws including those regarding women.
Seventh Aliyah - 15:29-33 pp. 669-670
The sacrifices that are to be brought in order to be purified.
Maftir - 15:31-33 p. 669-670
Haftorah - Malachi 3:4-24 pp. 1296-1298
Today is known as Shabbat HaGadol, the great Sabbath, because it is the Shabbat immediately preceding Passover. We reflect upon the past redemption from Egyptian slavery and look forward to the future redemption. Our haftorah reflects that theme, looking forward to the arrival of Elijah who will announce the messianic era.
