Naso
Parshat Naso
The Torah reading this morning continues the description of the Levitical functions and concludes with the tribal offerings brought for the dedication of the mishkan - the tabernacle. The bulk of the Torah reading describes various rites with which the priests may be involved - the Nazirite vow, the trial of the suspected adulteress, and the priestly blessing.
First Aliyah - Numbers chapter 4:21-37 pp. 791-792
A description of the work assigned to various Levitical families.
Second Aliyah - 4:38-49 pp. 792-793
The conclusion of the Levitical census.
Third Aliyah 5:1-10 pp. 793-795
The people are commanded to have all unclean people leave the camp because God’s presence dwells in the camp.
The people are also told how to make restitution for committing a sin.
Fourth Aliyah - 5:11-6:27 pp. 796-805
We are presented with the ritual procedure involved for a suspected adulteress. She has to drink bitter water; if she is guilty she will be terribly affected by it, if she is innocent, she won’t be.
Fifth Aliyah - 6:28-7:41 pp. 805-808
A list of offerings from the leader of each tribe for the dedication of the mishkan.
Sixth Aliyah - 7:42-71 pp. 808-810
A continuation of the list.
Seventh Aliyah - 7:72-89 pp. 810-811
The conclusion of the dedication ceremony.
Maftir - 7:87-89 p. 811
Haftorah - Judges 13:2-25 pp. 813-815
Our Haftorah describes the birth of Samson. His mother was barren and she prayed for a child. An angel appears to her and says she will give birth but she has to refrain from grape products and so will the future child. Also, the child may never shave - he is to be a Nazirite all his life. Because our Torah reading described the Nazirite vow, the section was chosen as the Haftorah.
