Noah

Parshat Noah/Rosh Chodesh

First Aliyah - Genesis chapter 6:9-22  pp.  41-43

God decides to destroy humanity because of Man’s terrible behavior.  God, though, decides to save Noah and his family because Noah is a righteous man who walks with God.  In order to survive, Noah is to build an ark and take a pair of each bird and animal.

 Second Aliyah  7:1-16  pp.  44-46

Of the pure animals, Noah is to take seven pairs; of the impure, only two pairs.  Rain will fall for 40 days and nights.

 Third Aliyah  7:17-8:14  pp.  46-48

Rain begins to fall and the flood covers all the mountains.  After the rain stops, the water remains for 150 years.  Finally, the ark comes to rest on Mt. Ararat in the seventh month.  In the tenth month, the mountain tops can be seen.  Forty days later Noah opens the window and sends out a raven.  Then he sends out a dove, but it comes back because it doesn’t find a resting place.  A week later Noah sends out a dove again and this time it comes back with an olive branch.  A week later he sends out the dove again and this time it doesn’t return.

 Fourth Aliyah - 8:15-9:7  pp. 48-51

God commands Noah to leave the ark.  In gratitude, Noah builds an altar and offers sacrifices.  That causes God to promise not to destroy humanity again.  God commands Noah and his family to be fruitful and multiply and commands them not to commit murder.

Fifth Aliyah - 9:8-17  pp. 51-52

God establishes a covenant between Himself and Noah promising not to destroy the world again.  God causes a rainbow to shine as a sign of the covenant.  The rainbow is to serve as an eternal sign of peace in the world.

Sixth Aliyah - 9:18-10:32  pp.  52-58

Noah plants a vineyard and one day becomes intoxicated from wine.  Ham sees his father and brings his brothers into the tent to show them what condition Noah is in.  They enter backwards to avoid shaming their father.  Ham is introduced as the  father of  Canaan.   When Noah awakes, he finds out what Ham has done and he curses Canaan.  We are then presented with a list of descendants of the three brothers and which nations they formed.

Seventh Aliyah  - 11:1-32  pp.  58-63

We are told that everyone spoke the same language.  Some gathered in Shinar to build a tower to reach the heavens.  God descends to ruin their plans and causes them to speak different languages.  The people become dispersed.  We are then presented with a list of generations from Shem, ending with Abram.

Maftir - Numbers  28:9-15  pp.  930-931

Today is the first day of the month of Cheshvan.  We read from a second scroll about the special offering for the new moon

Haftorah  - Isaiah 66:1-24  pp.  1220-1223

This haftorah describes the messianic vision of belief in one God.  From one new moon to the next and from Shabbat to Shabbat all people will worship God in Jerusalem.
