Terumah
Parshat Terumah
Now that the people have been told how to follow in God’s ways, they have to be told how to worship Him. They know what is expected of them when they interact with their fellow man, but they have to be told how to interact with God. The next few Torah readings describe the building of the portable sanctuary - the mishkan - the place where the people will communicate with God through sacrifices.
First Aliyah - Exodus chapter 25:1-16 pp. 485-488
God tells Moses to ask the people to donate precious objects: gold, silver, linen, acacia wood, etc. for use in building a sanctuary. First, though, God gives the dimensions of the ark.
Second Aliyah - 25:17-40 pp. 488-491
A cover must be fashioned for the ark and two cherubim sculpted at either end of the ark. God will talk to the people from between the two cherubim. Next a table, utensils, and a seven-branched candelabra must be constructed.
Third Aliyah - 26:1-14 pp. 491-493
God tells Moses the dimensions for the Tabernacle. First the pattern for the curtains is given.
Fourth Aliyah - 26:15-30 pp. 493-495
The design of the boards. The design of the bars.
Fifth Aliyah - 26:31-37 p. 495
The ark cover. The screen.
Sixth Aliyah - 27:1-8 pp. 496-497
