Tetzaveh

Parshat Tetzaveh

This morning we read about the final steps in preparing for the mishkan - the portable sanctuary - those steps involving the priest.  Not only were there specific details for building the mishkan, but there were also specific details for those who were to work in mishkan every day.  The Torah describes in great detail what the uniform of the priesthood was.

First Aliyah Exodus chapter 27:20-28:12  pp.  503-506
We are told to have an eternal light of pure olive oil burning in the mishkan.  The high priest was to wear a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, a tunic, a mitre and a girdle.  The ephod was made of linen.  Two stones with the names of the 12 tribes engraved on them were to be placed on the shoulder pieces of the ephod.

Second Aliyah  28:13-30  pp.  506-508
The breastplate will have four rows of stones; one of carnelian, topaz, and smaragd; one of carbuncle, sapphire, and emerald; one of jacinth, agate, and amethyst; and one of beryl, onyx, and jasper.  Twelve stones representing the 12 tribes.  Only the high priest wore the breastplate.

Third Aliyah  28:31-43  pp.  508-511
On the bottom of the robe, golden bells were to be attached so that the people could hear the kohen approach.  The words “Holy to the Lord” were to be engraved on the mitre.

Fourth Aliyah - 29:1-18  pp.  511-513
The special dedication ceremony for the priests is described.

Fifth Aliyah - 29:19-37  pp.  513-514
The consecration of the priests was to last seven days.

Sixth Aliyah - 29:38-46  pp.  515-517
A description of the daily sacrifices: two lambs - one in the morning, one in the evening.

Seventh Aliyah - 30:1-10  pp.  517-518
A special altar is to be built to burn incense.

Maftir – 30:8-10   pp.  517-518

Haftorah – Ezekiel  43:10-27  pp.  520-522
In the concluding chapters of his book, Ezekiel describes what the restored Temple in Jerusalem will look like.  Just as our Torah reading described the incense altar, our Haftorah describes the one to be built in the Temple.
