Parshat Tzav

This morning’s Torah reading is a continuation of the list of various sacrifices to be offered in the Tabernacle, and later in the Temple in Jerusalem. The portion concludes with the consecration ceremony of Aaron and his sons.

First Aliyah - Leviticus chapter 6:1-11 pp.  613-615
A description of the burnt offering, the continuously burning fire, and the meal offering.

Second Aliyah - 6:12-7:10 pp.  615-617
The sacrifice to be brought by the priests everyday; the sin offering and the guilt offering.

Third Aliyah 7:11-38 pp.  617-621
The peace offering and thanksgiving offering. Prohibition against eating the fat and blood of the animal, and we read about the priests’ portion of the sacrifice.

Fourth Aliyah - 8:1-13 pp.  621-622
Moses anoints and dresses the priests. 

Fifth Aliyah - 8:14-21 pp.  622-623
The special sacrifice for the consecration ceremony.

Sixth Aliyah - 8:22-29 pp.  623-624
The ceremony continues.

Seventh Aliyah - 8:30-36 pp.  624-625
Moses consecrates Aaron and his sons.  Aaron and his sons must remain isolated for seven days.

Maftir - 8:33-36 pp.  624-625

Haftorah - Jeremiah 7:21-8:3, 9:22-23
Our Torah portion contains the specifics of sacrificial worship and our haftorah preaches about the proper frame of mind to have when bringing a sacrifice. Ritual performance must go hand in hand with a commitment to morality and ethics.
