Vayyelech

Parshat Va’Yelech

This portion, one of the shortest, is Moses’ last talk to the people.  He realizes he is too old to continue working and he bids farewell to the community.

First Aliyah - Deuteronomy chapter 31:1-3  p. 1173

Moses tells the people that he is 120 years of age and he is too old to work.  He also reminds them that he cannot cross the Jordan River to enter the Promised Land.

Second Aliyah  31:4-6  pp.  1173-1174

With Joshua as their leader and with the help of God, the people will be invincible.

Third Aliyah - 31:7-9  p. 1174

Moses publicly installs Joshua as the new leader, saying “chazak ve’ematz,” be strong and of good courage.

Fourth Aliyah - 31:10-13  pp.  1174-1175

Moses gives the Torah to the priests and Levites, and instructs them to read the entire Torah every seven years on the holiday of Sukkot.

Fifth Aliyah - 31:14-19  pp.  1175-1177

God calls Moses and Joshua into the Tabernacle.  God tells them that the people will reject Him.  God wants them to write a poem that will serve as a testament to the covenant.

Sixth Aliyah - 31:20-24  pp.  1177-1178

The poem will be an everlasting testimony to the covenant, no matter whether the people follow the covenant or not.

Seventh Aliyah  - 31:25-30  pp.  1178-1179

Moses instructs the Levites to place the Torah in the Ark alongside the Ten Commandments.  Then Moses recites the poem to the people.  The poem is next week’s portion.

Maftir - 31:28-30  pp.  1178-1179

Haftorah  -Hosea 14:2-10, Micah 7:18-20, Joel 2:15-27  pp.  1235-1239

Because today is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Shabbat Shuva, the Haftorah this morning deals with repentance.  If the people turn back to God, the prophets claim, then God will accept them.
