Chesed Programs

The Shaare Tefila Chesed Committee is founded on several principals:

  • All Jews are responsible for one another. (Talmud Shavuot 39a)
  • Deeds of loving kindness can be accomplished through personal involvement, as well as money.  Deeds of loving kindness can be done for both rich and poor, and deeds of loving kindness apply to both the living and the dead. (Sukkah 49b)
  • Every person must share in every other person’s life; we must not be alone in sorrow or in joy.
As such, our Chesed Committee supports congregants facing life’s challenges. We help members feel connected to our Shaare Tefila “family,” whether it is a brief illness or an overwhelming life-cycle event.

Currently, we can provide support to congregants who need help shopping, running errands or providing phone calls and friendly visits.  We can also provide transportation, kosher meals and informational resources.  We work closely with Shaare Tefila’s Disabilities Awareness Committee-A.R.I. (All Are Included) and have assisted in presenting a Disabilities Awareness Shabbat each November.  In addition, we have provided our community with a health fair and a Sunday Seminar on “Caring for our Aging Parents.” We sponsor a monthly Friday night Shabbat dinner for residents of a local group home, as well.

When you need support or know of a congregant who is in need of the services of the Chesed Committee, please contact Rabbi Layman at 301 593-3410, or you may leave a message with the staff at the Synagogue office.  Remember, if we do not know of your need for our services, it will be difficult for us to provide them!

We are always looking for additional volunteers to add to our dedicated, hardworking team.  Call one of our committee members to see how you can be of assistance. In this way, all of us can help our Shaare Tefila family by providing acts of loving kindness towards others. (Pirkei Avot 1:2)
