Committee Duties

Shaare Tefila Committees 

Building: The Committee will coordinate all aspects of the move to the new location, working within the Congregation and the outside community to assure financing, construction, liaising with the new community and assuring all services overlap adequately, at a minimum.

Capital Campaign: Responsible for raising monies to support the building program to move to the new location.

Cemetery: Responsible for sale of grave sites, maintenance of property and coordinating with cemetery personnel, Congregation religious staff and administration, fr the Shaare Tefila Cemetery.

Chesed: Coordinates volunteers with Congregation members who are in need of assistance, such as driving to medical appointments, bringing in groceries, relieving caregiver for a few hours, visiting the sick, bringing in meals, etc. 

Communications: Responsible for seeing that information (e.g., news and updates about our Congregation, news about individual members, news about Congregation events) flows from staff and leadership to all members. 

Computer Services: Working with the Executive Director and staff of the Congregation to make optimum use of hardware and software available, including training, research into appropriate equipment and materials and associated technical assistance.

Finance: Monitors the finances of the Congregation. All financial matters are reviewed in this Committee, such as dues, appeals and fiscal recommendations. 

Friday Night Dinners: Responsible for coordination and staffing of volunteers for table settings and reservations, serving and cleanup.

Hazak/Senior Citizen: Works with Congregation Program Coordinator to plan and implement special programs for Congregation members over the age of 55, in conjunction with USCJ Hazak Commission.

House/Capital Improvements: Deals with issues about the building and how to maintain and provide upkeep for our physical plant and property. The Committee is responsible for planning and execution, subject to the Board and/or Congregation approval, of major improvements and construction. 

Israel Affairs: Responsible for the planning and conduct of programs and activities to enhance the involvement and support of the Congregation to promote the development and growth of the State of Israel and Masorti institutions in Israel. Responsible for educating the Congregation with respect to political situations affecting Israel, nationally and internationally.


Legal: Works on an as-needed basis to deal with issues as they arise, to ascertain the compliance with the Congregation Constitution and By-laws as well as local, state and federal regulations.

Library: Maintains the library, labeling and shelving new books.

Membership: 

The  membership committee concentrates on recruiting of prospective members, welcoming and transitioning New Members, as well as establishing retention programs (IE: Chavaroit/Friendship circles) for Seasoned congregants.  Please contact Cilla B. Personnel: Responsible for preparing and negotiating contracts with staff.  Oversees employee issues, personnel reviews, etc.

Publicity: Responsible for the dissemination of materials to keep the Congregation and the larger community apprised of the activities and programs of the Congregation, including the publication of the Tower and other bulletins, flyers and notices.

Religious: Deals with issues such as prayer books, condition of religious materials, providing ushers for Shabbat and holiday services, and other special projects. Gives out honors at Religious services, arranges for Torah and haftorot readers and other religious needs such as services and minyon needs. With the advice and consent of the Rabbi, establishes principles for religious services and standards for Shabbat, Holy Day and Kashrut observance on premises and at affairs sponsored by the Congregation and its affiliates. Confers with the School Board on those aspects of the services and ritual that involve participation of students. It arranges and conducts interviews with candidates for positions on the Religious staff and makes recommendations to the Board, unless otherwise provided by the Constitution. 

School: Works with Nursery School Director and Education Director to help with programming ideas, curriculum support and other policies that help with the education of the children of our congregation. Responsible for Library. Engages the teaching staff and recommends candidates for Education Director and Nursery School Director. Supervises school expenditures within the budget and prepares fiscal plans for the year. Recommends fees and tuitions to be charged for the schools. Responsible for Adult Education, establishing programs and classes, spreading Jewish knowledge among members of the Congregation by means of special lectures, study groups, Scholar-in-Residence programs and creating, maintaining and promoting a total educational program for adults, working with the Rabbi.

Security/STAAC: Works with Executive Director to implement safety measures, coordinate with local police and fire safety agencies, plan for contingencies and adequately secure plant, inside and outside, for the overall safety of Congregation members, families, guests and renters at all times.

Social Action: Responsible for the formulation, planning and implementation of Social Action programs involving the greater Jewish community and the general community.

Special Needs: Responsible for assuring access to all aspects of the Synagogue to all members and guests, as far as possible. 

Youth Commission: Operates as the policy-making, coordinating and supervising agency for all Congregation youth activities, maintaining liaison with National and Regional Youth Commissions and Departments. Interviews and recommends professional youth directors and leaders for hiring, and supervises them. 

Ways and Means: Responsible for developing and implementing programs and activities to raise funds for the operation of the Congregation, such as regular Bingo evenings.
